Snota

Yesterday was May 1st, also known as Labour Day, which in Norway is a public holiday. For me, and 16 other active people from the NTNUI ski and mountaineering group, this was en excellent opportunity to take the day off. Therefore, instead of spending the day inside studying for exams, we rented some cars and drove up to Folldal. This is a small valley which goes up into the mountainous area Trollheimen. Our goal was Snota (1668 m), and to our great fortune the weather was nothing less than excellent.

Going up was a bit strenuous, especially with equipment for telemark skiing, and a well deserved lunch break was gratefully enjoyed after a 2-3 hours slow climbing. Being outside in such beautiful surroundings, getting plenty of fresh air while doing fun exercise really gives meaning to the expression of working up an appetite. Food always taste so much better once you've worked hard to enjoy it, and a scenic view at the lunch table spices everything up a little.

Half an hour later we had all gathered some strength for the final climb up the slopes of Snota. Being equipped with climbing skins (on the ski soles), the journey up went very smoothly, even though the nice weather demanded a couple of rests for drinking water and catching some breaths. About 5 hours after heading out from the parking lot in Folldalen, we reached the summit.

Even though some of us had forgotten to bring oranges, the view from the peak repaid all the efforts climbing up. And then we still had the slopes to enjoy when going down, which really was a big part of the fun!
